I am widely active in local community life--most people know who I am before I introduce myself. At the time, the marriage equality conversation was approaching a tipping point, and I wanted to be a part of advocating for marriage — especially within Republican circles. Many people within the LGBTQ+ community view the Republican Party as this evil, bigoted, and horrific party. In the classroom you were expected to challenge each other and to be challenged by the professors, and I never felt like expressing more conservative ideas was something that was unwelcome.
