I started watching Netflix’s series Ratched. She was desexualized, and had no relevant personal life. But Harding remains under the care of Nurse Ratched, who is shown to have her own breakthrough in the late 40’s regarding the psychiatric ill-treatment of homosexuals. The colors are rich and lush. Mildred Ratched is a nurse with a troubled past and Gwendolyn Briggs is a powerful career woman who has fashioned herself a so-called ‘lavender marriage’.

She didn’t have a sex life, gay or straight. A long, emotional reiteration of everything we just found out, it takes all the air out of it, sapping it of its gravity and suspense. But it engages with it just enough for it to have little to no impact, other than to draw attention to its softball presence. Nurse Ratched’s first on-screen tryst is with Charles Wainwright (Corey Stoll), a hit man hired to kill her boss, and during their sexual encounter, her sexual kink for power role-play reveals her proclivity for morbid pleasure.

Nothing new is learned, and you find yourself desperate for it to be over. Kesey’s Nurse Ratched was deliberately blank on this issue. If you don’t now who Mildred Ratched is, she’s an antagonist and a nurse in the One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. And if there are any signs of the character Mildred Ratched is destined to become, they are muddled at best.

But that does not a cohesive show make, and this scene-to-scene cherry-picking of priorities makes for some truly bizarre moments, particularly when it wades into social issues.

And this disjointedness between scenes makes for yet another strange byproduct: sometimes the same piece of information is relayed, multiple times, with little regard for the fact that the audience already knows it. Dealing in a similar brand of exaggerated horror and harsh spectacle, and boasting many of the same actors Sarah PaulsonJon Jon BrionesFinn WittrockRatched could very well be a lost season of AHS. Or, maybe more accurately given its setting and subject matter, it could be a straight remake of its Asylum season.

The show does this a lot, picking and choosing its adversities on a scene-by-scene basis, just as it picks character motivation. And the gross, extravagant horror of antiquated medical practices, maladies, and injuries are out in full, Murphyesque force. And the show tends to change that on a whim, depending on what it needs out of a scene. Got A Story?. But then, in the very next sceneMildred rehashes this information again, in a drawn-out confession, straight into the camera.

But they are the most blatant. In the final moments, it’s revealed that he’s already on his way- with Charlotte, and a former nurse from the hospital. To its credit, it is quite the spectacle.
