Well, when Autostraddle published our very first list of out gay WNBA players several years back, it held merely 15 names. In the WNBA season, there are 42 out and proud LGBTQ+ players between the 12 basketball teams: from Brittney Griner to Sydney Colson. So, coming out for me was a process of becoming comfortable and confident to be able to say the words and be honest about how I felt. When we talk about coming out stories, every single one of us has a different experience.
Things are not always what they seem. I went to college and still dated guys but always had this curiosity. So after some extensive research, here is a list of current and former WNBA players that have either come out and/or living authentically as part of the LGBTQIA+ community sorted by last name. I try to always remember that there is a lot more to our players then what they do on the court, to be sensitive to that and to try to learn more about them.
We've got answers. I want to be with a woman. The answer: Very! When I embraced that, it gave me a confidence to open up my world and allow people to be a part of all of menot just the professional side. To be proud of what you do, who you love, all of it. To be proud of being unique and bringing that to every situation, every person you meet and into your whole life.
